The Nine Olde Witches were a group of nine, immensely powerful witches who established Luna Nova Magical Academy over 1,600 years ago. In the 7th century, they decided to seal the Grand Triskellion within Arcturus Forest.
Only two of them had their names revealed; Woodward and Beatrix Cavendish. Other seven are completely unknown at this point, though we can still conceptualize how they look like based upon their hats.

The Nine Olde Witches appeared around the 5th century at a time when the witch civilization was in decline, but with their strength, they managed to stop the decline and restored the power of the magic world. They are respected as legendary figures who created many miracles, helping and guiding people in many ways. Over 1,600 years ago, they created Luna Nova Academy to rehabilitate witches who had lost their place in the world and to restore the prestige of witchcraft. In the 7th century, they sealed the Grand Triskellion in the Arcturus Forest to protect it from falling into the wrong hands.
After Luna Nova was destroyed in the Witch Hunts, in the 18th century, Woodward and the contemporary witch Jennifer took it upon themselves to rebuild it and create a new generation of witchcraft, giving rise to the beginning of the Golden Age of Magic.
Possible Successor? (Nine New Witches)
In the present day, Akko Kagari and eight other witches (Lotte Jansson, Sucy Manbavaran, Diana Cavendish, Amanda O'Neill, Constanze Amalie von Braunschbank-Albrechtsberger, Jasminka Antonenko, Ursula Callistis, and Croix Meridies) working with her established themselves at the New Nine Witches. It is not yet known if each of them bears a resemblance to the original nine witches. In Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing, the band reformed once again in some respects albeit with Ursula and Croix being replaced by Guest Student and Neby.
Appearances
- The Headmistress's office displays 9 statues in the shape of the Olde Witches' hats. They take up a prominent space in the room.
- Some of the hats are based on hats and headgear from witches seen in other media such as the Scarlet Witch (third from the left in the image of the hats) or Witch Bandora/Rita Repulsa (fourth from the right).[3]
- Diana finds the Book of the Nine Olde Witches in the Luna Nova Archives under the light of a blue moon. The book tells about how the witches sealed an ancient and powerful form of magic known as the Grand Triskellion, and how one can break the seal again.
- The spirit of the Olde Witch Woodward resides in the Blue Moon Abyss, which can only be entered on a Blue Moon. Her hat is the one in the middle, fifth from either side.
- The Olde Witch Beatrix was the founder of the House of Cavendish, and her spirit resides in the Cavendish Manor. Her hat is third from the right.
